Can you build a Shopify store yourself?

Short answer: yes, you can build a basic Shopify store yourself. The platform is made for people without technical skills. The trouble starts with local shipping, translating the theme, legal pages, and features the standard theme does not support.
Here is what you can do on your own and where people usually get stuck.
What you can do yourself
- Pick a theme and change colours, fonts and the logo in the visual editor.
- Add products, photos, prices and variants such as size and colour.
- Set up the basic pages: home, about, contact.
- Connect a domain and launch the store.
For a store with a few dozen products and standard shipping, that is entirely doable.
Where most owners get stuck
Local couriers
Shopify has no built-in connection to many local couriers, including Econt and Speedy in Bulgaria. You have to choose an app, set it up and check that it calculates the price correctly, lets the customer pick an office, and creates shipping labels automatically. Mistakes here cost real orders.
Translating the theme
Most themes ship with an incomplete or machine translation for smaller languages. Buttons, cart messages and customer emails all have to be checked one by one.
Legal pages and cookie consent
An online store needs terms and conditions, a privacy policy, return information and cookie consent that fit local law. Shopify’s template texts are generic and not written for your country.
Too many apps
Every missing feature looks solvable with an app. Each app, though, adds a monthly fee and code that slows the store down. After ten or so apps, the store is slow and expensive to run.
How long it takes
A basic store takes a few days if you know what you are doing. If you are learning as you go, it easily becomes a few weeks. The real question is whether that is the best use of your time as an owner, compared with working on products and sales.
Monthly costs to plan for
Shopify is not free even when you build it yourself. Plan for the platform subscription, app subscriptions, a paid theme if the free one is not enough, and a fee on every order if you do not use Shopify’s own payment system. The cost comparison with WooCommerce is covered in Shopify or WooCommerce.
When doing it yourself makes sense
- You are testing a product and want to see if there is demand.
- You have few products and simple shipping.
- You have the time and want to learn the platform.
When to get help
- Shipping and payments have to work without errors from day one.
- You have hundreds of products, or products with many variants.
- You want the store to rank in Google and load fast.
- You are migrating an existing store and do not want to lose your rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to build a Shopify store?
Not for a basic store. Changes the theme does not support need Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Can I start on my own and hand the store to a developer later?
Yes. The store stays yours and the developer gets collaborator access. The fewer apps you have installed, the easier it is to pick up.
Is Shopify or WooCommerce easier for a beginner?
Shopify is easier to start with. WooCommerce takes more setup at the beginning, but gives more control and lower monthly costs.
